Boycott X (formerly known as our favorite Twitter)

The Human Cost of Elon Musk's X: A Platform Undermined by Impulsiveness and Greed

Since Elon Musk took over Twitter (now X), the platform has transformed from a global town square into a disorderly experiment one that has hurt individuals, stifled dissent, and placed profits over individuals. The following is a critical examination of the harm:

Emotional Impact on Users

1. Whimsical Suspensions & Broken Trust

Capricious bans: Musk’s personal vendettas have led to arbitrary account suspensions (journalists, critics, even competitors), undermining free speech he claims to champion.

Shadowbanning & throttling: Users cite mysterious reductions in reach for posting views that are contrary to Musk's interests.

2. Amplification of Toxicity

Reviving extremists: The reinstatement of suspended accounts (i.e., conspiracy theorists, hate figures) has made X unsafe for marginalized groups.

Algorithmic outrage bait: The website rewards outrage, drowning out constructive debate beneath polarizing headlines.

3. Emotional Manipulation for Profit

"All out engagement": Musk's "free speech" movement overlooks the way outrage translates into clicks—users' loss of emotional stamina.

Addictive UI updates: More notifications, more recommended content, less feed control.

The Gold-Digger Critique

1. Monetizing Decay

Charging for core features: Verification, longer articles, and even good reach now cost money, making a previously open platform a paywall hellscape.

Brands as ATMs: Musk scolds brands for pausing ads (referring to it as "censorship") without being provided any actual brand safety.

2. Removing Legacy Value

Broken promises: Musk promised to fight bots but turned verification into a bot-maker's paradise ($8 = instant credibility).

Ignoring core users: Activists, reporters, and developers who made Twitter useful for years now have to deal with API rate increases, broken tools, and hostility.

What's Left?

Speed of breaking news: Still unparalleled, though tarnished by misinformation.

Niche communities: Other groups maintain X, but alternatives arise daily.

The Bottom Line

Musk's X is no longer a public utility—it's a billionaire ego playground where users are emotional test subjects and features have a cost. The platform's value? Extracted, not nurtured.
